The iconic F-4 'PHANTOM' shown here as an 'E' model was quickly recognizable by features such as its broad short tail, downward sloped tail plains and bent up wing tips. This twin engine multi-role fighter wasn't without its faults, but its pluses far outweighed any negatives that it may have had. Pilots adored it for its reliability, speed, and the ability to get them home. One F-4 pilot once told me that this plane saved his butt on numerous occasions while flying in Southeast Asia. The airplane went by numerous unofficial nicknames such as 'Lead Sled' and 'Double Ugly' but to most its just 'Phabulous'.
