Depicted here are PBJ-1D Medium bombers of the U.S. Marine VMB-413 who earned the nickname 'The Flying Nightmares' because of the hit and run harassing type missions they flew routinely in the Southwest Pacific.

Flying in all types of weather both day and night, the Nightmares were pioneers in the use of early aircraft mounted radar which is seen here mounted in a pod on the belly of the aircraft behind the bomb bay.

Seen here attacking shipping around Rabaul in April of 1944, VMB-413 soon switched to the much more dangerous night heckling missions.
