The invasion of the Aleutian island chain in Alaska was the first occupation of American soil since the War of 1812.  It is a sparse barren landscape on the edge of nowhere but it had to be defended none the less.

Pictured here are two P-38 Lightnings of the 54th Fighter Squadron based on Attu Island in 1943.  The 54th was one of the first to use the P-38 in combat and the first to shoot down enemy aircraft with the Lightning.

The Lightning was unique in that it was a twin engined fighter.  It had exceptional range and was used in all theaters of operation in World War Two, however, because of the additional redundancy of a back up engine it was a favorite in the Pacific where vast expanses of open ocean had to be crossed and routinely patrolled.
